The Yard Sale- A Short Story (pt1)

Steam still clung to the glass shower door. Water dripped onto the white tile as Maya combed her long, auburn hair stick strait down to her bare shoulder blades. The door that lead to the house’s master bedroom slowly crept open to create a long black sliver extending from the ceiling to the floor. Michael stuck his nose in through the crack, his lips were the only visible flesh in the light beaming from above the bathroom sink. He backed out just a bit, the slight scent of lavender rolling off her soaked skin caused his stomach to churn with nausea.
“It’s quarter past six, Maya. I’m going to start putting the tables out. Grass is just about dry.”
Maya’s eyes never left her sight in her reflection. The hairbrush stroked the same damp strands again and again.
“We can wait another week, you know.” Her voice was barely audible above the humming of the gaudy fluorescent bulbs. She cleared her throat with a soft ruffle-unsettling phlegm in her throat formed from the consumption of moist air in the shower.
“No. It’s time. I’ll go set up the tables. Bring out the cloths when you are dressed.” His tongue lapped his pink lips before disappearing behind the door as it clasped shut.
After draping the damp towel neatly around the shower rod, Maya walked down the long hallway of the second floor foyer. Above the railing, the crystal chandelier hung over the hardwood den below. The leather wrap-around couch and a new high-def television sat in silence-four cloth sheets sprawled out on the furniture. Behind an old wooden chest they received for their wedding from her in-laws, there were the windows that lead as a portal out into the front yard. Michael was hunched over a gray card table, straitening the legs until the top stood flat and sturdy. She looked away, even her husband looked like an alien to her today. She had been putting off this weekend for two months now, and it was this feeling of loneliness that she had been dreading.

Her breath shortened as she reached the marble staircase, swallowing the lump in her throat. It was just another Saturday, she whispered to herself. Only it wasn't. It would finally happen today, not next weekend. And surely not the next.
Maya imagined what this evening would be like- after a part of her was laid out on ten dollar walmart card tables and snatched up for another’s story to unfold upon.  The newly-wed neighbors could be tucking in their new born in one of her baby’s blankets, another would by untying white laces from a pair of green booties. A part of her and Michael’s life would soon be a staple of happiness in another family’s life.
Her hazel eyes darted to an empty room on the right. The sunlight had just spread its first rays on the vacant yellow walls. A tight pull in her chest and her eyes darted back to lead her forward. Each step felt like an attempt to lift lead pillars as she made her way down to the pile of boxes stacked at the front door. The bottom one with a big S, the one on top of that with two lower case b’s. Shoes and bibs, she thought. To the left there was a pile of old work shirts from Michael’s days at the lawn and leafy center where he landscaped during the weekends in the summer while she was six months pregnant. “I don’t mind getting my hands dirty, as long as we get to spoil her rotten” she heard his distant remark echo in her ear. She left the boxes by the door and walked to the cloths draped over the back of the couch.

“Look! Carrie looks like a little peanut!” Maya squealed, her index finger tracing a small pocket of light on the printed sonogram.
Michael gently pinched the other side of the film, “Ha, you mean Christian. Look at that strapping jaw line and his already bulging biceps!”
Maya nudged her husband of one year-next Friday-just below the rib cage. “CARRIE doesn’t appreciate your humor, dear.” She got up on her tip toes and pecked his cheek, “But good thing I adore it.”
“But in all honesty, if it is a boy, we decided on Christian, right?” Michael let go so his wife could insert the picture back into the manila envelope that held several more photos taken from the sides of his wife’s abdomen.
“Of course we can, honey. And if it’s a girl, we agreed on Carrie Magdalene after my grandmother.”
“I guess. You know I am half tempted to say no. You know, the first time I met your family she announced to your parents I looked like a drowned muskrat.” Michael ran his palm across his prickly scalp, feeling an intense longing for his previously moppy hairstyle that he took pride in since his freshman year at Boston.
“Well it’s a good thing you showered and cut your hair before the wedding. Or she probably would have informed the entire wedding party too.” Maya rolled her eyes and skipped a few steps ahead on the pavement.
Michael marveled at his wife in the worn in pink spring dress they found at Fabulous Finds thrift store just down the street from their new home. How did I end up so lucky, he whispered to himself? He wiped his wrists clean of any dirt that still clenched his pores from that morning’s early trip to the mulch farm. Then he crept up behind her, catching her off guard, and lifted his still-thin wife into the august sun.

Vegan Coconut Banana Bread

Being that I buy so many bananas at one time, sometimes I can't eat them fast enough before they go bad. Banana bread may be one of my favorite baking ventures, as it's one of the easiest recipes to execute!

Healthy Banana Bread Recipe

I found an incredible banana bread (3 ways!) recipe this past weekend and let me tell you- It made my mouth water onto my keypad. But trying to stay close-to-vegan, I altered my list of ingredients just a tad. I also left out the chocolate chips and added in shredded coconut. Nothing says summer like bananas and coconut!

Ingredients
DRY INGREDIENTS
(2 .1/4.) Cup flour (whole wheat unbleached)
(1) tsp Baking Soda
(1) tsp Baking Powder
(1/2) tsp salt
_________________________

OTHER INGREDIENTS
(3) *over ripe* Nanners ;)
(1) tsp Cinnamon
(2 .1/2.) tbs *Buttermilk (mix 1 Cup Soy milk w/ 2 Tbs Lemon juice. Sit for 5 minutes until thick)
(1/2) Cup Apple Sauce (2 eggs substitute)
(1/2) Cup Earth Balance Spread + 2 Tbs Canola Oil (or 9 Tbs Canola Oil)
(1) Cup Sugar
(1) tsp Vanilla
(2/3) Cup shredded coconut (unsweetened)

Directions

1. Preheat Oven to 325 degrees
2. Mix dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Set aside
3. In separate bowl, mash bananas (Nanners) and *Buttermilk
4. Fold in oil, sugar, and applesauce.
5. Fold in shredded coconut
6. Bake for 1hr+10min.
7. Cool-

(Top with shredded coconut & powdered sugar if desired!)

Of course, you can use eggs and milk in this recipe- but for the sake of our animal friends, our healthy insides, and that ever sought-after bikini bod, I made it Vegan-Friendly. Have at it friends! Enjoy a warm slice of sweet, sweet summertime

Friday Trick- Here's a Limmerick

A flamingo named Frank stood in the muck.

His one foot was free while the other stood stuck.

And to his dismay-

He was trapped for the day.

So he made friends with a duck

Do the Twist

I am not much of a summer person (Gasp! I know…) But one things that I do love about the season is that my hair is usually long, wavy (the only upside to humidity) and pony-tail cooperative. Since starting my new job, I’ve been experimenting with ways to put my hair up to beat the heat but also look somewhat like an attempt to look cute.

My favorite is leaving the actual tail long and wavy, but keeping bangs out of the way with the side twist…

What do you think? Are you doing the twist?

With a touch of Glass...

Inspired by the highly anticipated Disney Marathon in January, I brought out my inner-mouse in my latest bottle-project.

Remnant

Remnant:
(noun) A small remaining quantity of something.
(adj) remaining.

I am blessed to call Jen Griffin my friend. Through my church in Wilmington during my college career, I befriended Jen and her husband and grew so much as a person just from their influence in my life. They are two of the most talented, patient, and compassionate people I have ever met.

One of the many things that I admire most about Jen is her ability to craft ordinary materials and turn them into something extraordinary. And I don't mean pom poms and googly eyes (even though these two materials are fun and cute)... I mean an ability to take something that may seem irrelevant, disposable, and worn down- and turn it into a treasured item that someone somewhere can use each and every day of their busy life.

Just recently I bought one of Jen's tote bags, part of her online Remnant collection, and I have been obsessed with its durability and versatility- let alone its beautiful design! I carry it to work, took it out for a dinner date, and even found it to be a good gym buddy.

I urge anyone who hasn't seen Jen's work to rush over to see her designs on her Remnant page where you can browse and buy your favorites! I promise you will not be disappointed by what this incredible woman has to offer.

(Did I mention Jen does her own photography too? All of her photos can be seen on her blog and on her online storefront)

Summer Bucket List Update!

Does everyone remember my summer bucketlist I created back at the beginning of June? Well it's already nearing the tail-end of July and I thought I'd give a little update, considering I've completed some of the items on the list!

1. Compile 120+ Poems with illustrations for possible publication- In/P...
Look for a new poem with illustrations next week!

2. See The Hunger Games movie... FINALLY-
Ok, so the DVD comes out August, so until then, I will have to put this little number on hold.

3. Go to at least 2 different concerts
With my new job and moving to a new city, July has been a whirlwind. But having about a month and a half left of the summer season (I'm counting mid-september as still summer) I plan on securing tickets for some good shows!

4. Begin training for Disney half/marathon- STARTED! Jan 13

Yes, the training has begun! You can follow along (ahem, and by follow along, I mean join myself and friends in the race!) by looking at my training plan and signing up here!

5. Secure a big girl job – DONE! Started Jul 16 (Check Me Out!) and... AGAIN!

6. Reach over 30 followers for my blog- On The Wing
Still working on this- So if you have a gmail/blogger account, help a girl out!

7. Play on an organized sports team for a sport I never played as a child
This is in progress. But I'm looking forward to finding a volleyball, kickball, or flag football team ASAP!

8. Make an inspirational video and post it on Youtube
In progress... be on the lookout soon ;)

9. Visit baby sister in TN!

Cross this one off the list! I may not have made it all the way to TN, but I did make it out to see my friend Amanda, Danella, and Rachael in Asheville for a day of exploring, good food and hiking!

10. Make plans for a trip out of the country
This one will depend on the budget... But keeping my fingers crossed!

11. Find a new recipe for my favorite food
That's what this weekend is for! :)

12. Find a pen pal in a Spanish speaking country- Not a pen pal, but online friend from aiport.
Two weeks ago, I was stranded in the Dallas airport for 14 hours. I befriended a kind woman from Mexico who was having a hard time understanding the terminal updates and translated them into spanish. She may not be a "pen-pal" but we are for sure facebook friends and conversing regularly!

13. Eat an entire pint of Ben and Jerry’s and not feel guilty

14. Read two new books- In progress- Finished Nicholas Spark's Safe Haven-
Now I'm  looking for next book!

Any reccommendations?

15. Complete all 10 Seasons of Friends.- In progress- On season 7!

There you have it! Some things crossed off, others in progress. One thing's for sure, I'm having a great summer so far! I hope everyone out there is too...

Happy Weekending!

Spacin' Out

It’s been a crazy week, to say the least! Starting a new job is nothing short of overwhelming, hectic, tiring, but overall wonderful. Three days into my new job at Premier, Inc. and I am already seeing the working world at its finest. Pencil skirts, cute blouses, high-heels, and decked-out cubicals. Oh yea, and there’s actual work too. But that will come a little later…

When it comes to personalizing my space, I always like to bring out the corky side. That includes my Pooh Bear-tequila bottle, Michael’s Craft store clearance items, photos of family and friends, and coffee mugs upon coffee mugs. I love the occasional inspirational quote and postcard from family members overseas.

Do my desks look like these? No…Well… Not yet.
Oh, and work is going fine- The typical first week agenda, a few training seminars, meeting new people, mentorships, and reading… A LOT of reading and note-taking. (I thought I already graduated college?)

A Word From Blake Lively

Just as the rain started to fall and the thunder boomed overhead, I was walking into Barnes and Noble to spend a lazy afternoon. Seeing the beautiful Blake Lively on the cover of Marie Claire, I picked it up to read her article about the new drama, Savages. But instead of ending the article with a desire to see the movie, I was struck by one of her statements in particular...

"I've been with very few people. If I'm not with somebody who really excites or inspires me, then I'd rather be by myself."

I believe this is a mindset that is hard for the current single ladies to accept- to think it's better to be alone than to be with someone else that doesn't make you a better version of yourself. But I fully agree and hope other women can too- Don't be afraid to ride solo to enjoy the peace and comfort of your own personal acceptance. The company will follow, and with the right one it most surely will be worth the wait.

California- The Last Hoorah!

Beginning my new job a week from this morning, I had all of last week (and this) to spend my down time wisely. Being that I love to travel, love my family, and love the west coast, I picked a flight and within two days, I was sitting in a jet plane heading towards the California Coast to visit my aunt for the last hoorah! In a few short statements, my trip included...

  • An hour and a half aerobics session with Richard Simmons in Beverly Hills.
    Yea, Dude's crazy!
  • Fireworks from my aunt's balcony in Marina Del Rey. Happy July 4th!
  • Exploring the canyons around Malibu beach.
I can confirm, even though I love the beach...
I am DEFINITELY a mountains lady!
  • Traffic jams upon traffic jams for no apparent reason.
But I'm not complaining! I got to sight see more around the streets of LA that way!
  • A 10 mile walk with my good friend Jesse (Check out his blog, he's pretty awesome)
Oh, and we ended up on a Ferris Wheel ride on the Santa Monica pier.
    ((Adventure is Out There!))
  • Morning walks to Venice Beach to stumble upon early morning surf contests
    (Hellooooo surfer boys!)
  • Muscle Beach, the birthplace of physical fitness...
and monkey humans on grown up playground equipment.
  • Sunsets... Need I say more?

Best Wishes in Starspangled Tights

A friend of my aunt wanted to surprise me for a fun night out in Beverly Hills during my trip to the west coast. And boy... was I surprised! Helloooo Richard Simmons!

Dancing to 1980's techno remixes of American songs (all on vinyl, I tell you!) I got a first hand look of Slimmons. If his outfit doesn't scream "Happy July 4th!" I don't know what will.

Have a great independence day, everyone! Until next week... stay classy you wonderful Americans, you! <3

Vegan July 4th Cupcakes!

It's almost that time to start celebrating the land of the free. Home of beautiful spacious skies, those amber waves of grain, and some purple mountain majesties... Oh America, happy ((almost)) birthday!

Just like those days of birth for my lovely friends of all sorts, I am a sucker for cupcake celebrations! So this wonderful country wouldn't feel left out, I went ahead and made some in honor of our free land! Since attempting a Vegan Lifestyle for the past 5 days (and still counting!) these tasty morsels are 100% vegan (free of dairy, eggs, meat) but 100% awesome sauce!

Whip up the cake recipe (found below). Bake at 350 degrees 20-25 minutes. Let cool.

Pipe icing (recipe found below) through a plastic bag with a miniscule slit cut at the corner. Top with something patriotic-colored...like raspberries and blueberries (staying vegan)!

And...DEVOUR!

To save on funds, I bought red cupcake liners at the dollar store to constitute for red berries. But if I may say, don't skimp on the blue b's!

Thanks to the lovely Liz for helping me make these babies! (And taste testing licking the bowl clean of any icing we whipped up!)

Finally Employed and It Feels So Good!

Pop the champagne! Spray the confetti! This girl has finally been offered a ticket to ride the real world roller-coaster.

So to all of you who stuck with me through my search for a job, no matter how much I embraced failure or complained about the process, I thank you for all your support and well wishes! I am officially the newest Product Support Specialist for Premier Healthcare Alliance.

((Thanks to my  friend and future co-worker, Jordan over at Southern Hospitality! She was able to capture this snapshot of me just before my interview last week! Hope I don't look as nervous as I felt!))

I can't wait to start working for this amazing company, meet new people, and get immersed in a possible career that will be oh-so-fulfilling! But in the mean time, I am heading somewhere to enjoy my last couple weeks of acceptable laziness before pulling up my big girl panties...

Can you guess where I'm heading for the last hoorah?:

Best wishes for a good week, east coasters! Stay cool (literally!) Is it Fall yet?
