Toy Box Prayer

Inside a toy box of gold and brass
lays a hidden treasure mass
some of plastic, some of wood
misfits of lost childhood
but what's on top of all the mess
sits a doll in an amber dress
her cheeks of rose, a porcelain face
cuffs on her shoulder of ribbon and lace
a crack in her cheek below blue eyes
rusty knees support pliant thighs
bloomers stained from age and wear
a head of thin copper hair
and this particular doll in case
hides under a roof of fine disgrace
seemingly forgotten but reality knows
that's not how her story goes
memories attached to her past in play
keep her company day by day
and when the chest is opened at last
she'll find a way to leave her past
she'll rise out back into the light
and know the wait was worth the fight
fulfilled and loved she'll feel within
The Prayer of the lost is answered again
